Single Tooth Implantation
Single tooth implants can be used in people who are missing one or more teeth. An implant is surgically placed in an opening that is made by your dentist in the jawbone. After the implant integrates (attaches) to your bone, it acts as a new root for the crown that will be replacing your missing tooth. A crown (cap), which is made to look like a natural tooth, is attached to the implant and fills the space left in the mouth by the missing tooth.
For this procedure to work, there must be enough bone in the jaw, and the bone has to be strong enough to hold and support the implant. If there is not enough bone, be may need to be added with a procedure called bone augmentation. In addition, natural teeth and supporting tissues near where the implant will be placed must be in good health.
For successful Implant treatment, it is important that your surgeon is experienced and has had further training specifically in dental implant placement and with the proper qualifications provide the treatment for you. At Cook Parade dental surgery, our implant dentist Dr. Cecilia So has completed a two year Graduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry with the University of Sydney, and is also involved in implant education as a clinical mentor and committee member for the course.
It is also important that your dentist uses a premium implant brand, to ensure that the medical device you receive has the proper research and development, manufacturing quality control, and lifetime warranty. Multiple Teeth Implantation
When multiple teeth are missing or failing, treatment options may include:
- A removable partial denture
- A multiple tooth supported fixed bridge
- An implant-supported bridge
A Multiple Tooth-Supported Fixed Bridge
It is a conventional tooth replacement option and has all the complications, compromises and risks of a single tooth bridge, only to a much greater degree. Problems of decay, root canal infections, periodontal bone loss and bone atrophy can be worse simply because there are more teeth involved. Unfortunately, larger bridges fail faster than single tooth bridges.
